What ‘Apocalypto’ Gets Wrong

At least some of it. Historian Julia Guernsey says that Apocalypto is an insult to Mayan culture in an interview with American-Statesman. Among other things, Guernsey criticizes Gibson’s portrayal of the Maya as overly violent and subhuman.

  1. Gibson portrays almost everyone as overly violent and subhuman, except for the chosen few he portrays as saints and heroes. Anyone familiar with Braveheart surely knows better than to expect historical accuracy from him? (Although it’s always handy to have the details from people who know what they’re talking about…)
